Zongzi – a tradition for the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival (Chinese: 端午节, Duānwǔjié) is one of the three most significant traditional holidays in China, alongside Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival. Duanwu is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar, which is why it is also called the Double Fifth Festival. It usually falls in early June by the Gregorian calendar and symbolically marks the beginning of hot summer. This year, the holiday falls on June 19.

The sound of drums, spectacular races of colourful boats, and eating zongzi – stuffed rice of triangular shape wrapped in bamboo leaves – are the most recognisable elements of the holiday. Behind them lies something more: a Chinese legend of honour and self-sacrifice, as well as ancient beliefs about protection from diseases and evil spirits.
